What is a Trench Drain
An industrial trench drain is a type of floor drain that rapidly removes surface water. Trench drains may also help with the containment of chemical spills.
These drains may have a solid cover or grating over the drain. The top of the drain is flush with the floor. The floor must be graded and the drain installed at the lowest point for drainage.
How an Industrial Trench Drain Works
The drains are normally made of concrete. Some trench drains are made or installed during the formation of the foundation. Drains may have a liner made of polymer or metal material.
Trench drains are sometimes confused with French drains. French drains are constructed of a perforated pipe buried in a gravel bed to disperse the liquid into the surrounding ground.
Seamless Trench Drains
Trench drains are cast into an industrial foundation using forms made of wood or metal. The form creates the void in the foundation that will become the drain. This trench drain process is labor and time intensive but results in effective drains.
Trench drains made in this fashion create a seamless drain through the foundation that ultimately connects to an outlet. Once the foundation and the drain are set, a liner may be placed inside the drain cavity for additional support.
Precast Trench Drains
A precast trench drain is another type of system. Precast drains are installed after the foundation has been poured. They may also be installed during an industrial production upgrade.
Precast drains are manufactured using the dimensions of the trench drain. They can then be installed into the foundation of the facility. This can be a less expensive option for existing and new construction, but it is not available in all locations.

Linear System Drains
One of the most noticeable trench drains is the linear system drain. This was first used in England at airports. A long system of line drains was designed and installed at the airports in England as a solution for rain drainage.
These are easily recognized by the long line of metal, or linear, grates in the ground. Linear drains are installed at an angle. Water flows in a channel around or in a facility, eventually reaching the lowest point in the system where it then drains.
